Description

Also known as pine resin or Greek pitch, rosin is obtained from the distillation of pine resin. It comes in the form of small, solid, translucent, amber or brownish-colored chunks that have a characteristic resinous odor.

Thanks to its great versatility, it is used in a wide variety of industries, from music to the manufacture of adhesives and paints.

Characteristics of rosin chunks

Rosin is a naturally occurring material that varies in color depending on the source of the resin used. It is composed mainly of resin acids, resin acid esters and other derivatives of pine resin.

Like natural waxes or gums and natural earth pigments it is obtained from nature, but in this case it undergoes a distillation process before being used in industry.

Rosin chunks have excellent adhesion capacity, flexibility and high temperature resistance. Rosin is insoluble in water, but dissolves readily in solvents such as alcohol, ether and benzene. Its melting point is relatively low (between 70 and 80 °C).

Uses and applications of rosin

Its ability to adapt to different processes and its compatibility with numerous materials make rosin a valued option in many industrial applications:

Music industry

It is used in the manufacture of bows for stringed instruments such as violins, violas, cellos and double basses. In addition, it is applied in the friction zone of the bow to improve adhesion to the strings and sound quality.

Paints and adhesives

In the manufacture of paints and varnishes it acts as a binder to provide cohesion and adhesion. It is also used as an ingredient in the manufacture of adhesives, especially hot-melt or thermo-fusible adhesives, and in the rubber industry as a softening agent.

Solder

Together with other components, it forms a solder paste or flux that is applied to metal surfaces to improve the quality and strength of the solder. The flux helps to clean surfaces of oxides and contaminants, reduce the surface tension of the molten metal and prevent the formation of new oxide layers during the soldering process.

When buying rosin in chunks and using it, it is important to keep in mind that this material can be irritating to the skin and respiratory tract, so it is important to take precautions when handling it and to use it in suitable environments.
