What is beeswax and how is it produced?

Bees produce wax through glands located in their abdomen called wax glands. Young honeybees are the ones that produce wax, only between 10 and 18 days of life. They use it to build and expand their hive.

Beeswax is made up of 300 organic substances, produced in the form of flakes, which bees then shape according to their needs. The color of the wax ranges from deep yellow to brown, with golden hues in between. The coloration depends on the bees’ diet.

Uses and properties of beeswax

The uses of beeswax are based on its many properties. Beeswax is, among other things, waterproof, antibiotic, healing, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, emollient, softening, and emulsifying.

For all these reasons, it has been traditionally used in the manufacture of candles, wood protectors, shoe polishes, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
