Growing demand for sustainable, environmentally-friendly and plant-based products, has given candelilla greater prominence in the world of natural waxes.
Origin and extraction of candelilla wax
Candelilla wax is obtained from a plant native to Mexico that grows in the Chihuahuan Desert. It is unique in being one of the few plants in the world with a high hydrocarbon content, which facilitates the extraction of its natural wax.
Candelilla wax was already known to the indigenous people of the region in pre-Hispanic times, when it was used for medicinal purposes and to protect bowstrings against the forces of nature.
Nowadays, candelilla wax is obtained by applying an organic extraction agent, an acid, which obtains wax of excellent quality without harming the environment.
Properties and uses of candelilla wax
Candelilla is a very stable, impermeable wax, with protective and softening properties, which also provides a remarkable shine, similar to that of carnauba wax.
The cosmetic and food industries are the main users of this wax, which also has pharmaceutical and technical applications.
In cosmetics, it is used as an emollient and film-forming agent for skin protection.
In the food industry, it serves as an anti-caking, emulsifying and coating agent, among others. Candelilla wax can be found in chewing gum, cereals, beverages, candies, baked goods, fresh fruits, pulses, nuts, seeds, and many more products
