Paraffins

The versatility of

paraffins

Paraffin is a wax or mineral oil mainly derived from hydrocarbons (petroleum) and minerals such as coal. Due to its properties, it has a multitude of applications in the manufacturing of all kinds of products. It is a solid material at room temperature, inert, shiny, waterproof, and non-toxic, which extends its use even to the food and pharmaceutical industries. Additionally, it is biodegradable, and its combustion does not release harmful or corrosive vapors. This makes it an ideal input for the manufacture of candles, an industry it has led for a long time.

Paraffin is also used in cosmetics, construction, coatings, textiles, electricity, and more.

Refined and semi-refined paraffins

According to the refining process (oil removal) they undergo, paraffins are divided into different types, with diverse properties. The refined paraffins are known for their high purity, excellent shine, and for being odorless. They are very resistant to oxidation and have a very low oil content: they are the hardest paraffins. On the other hand, semi-refined paraffins have a higher oil content, which makes them less hard. They have a characteristic odor and their color can range from crystalline to opaque white. They are considered a good substitute for refined paraffins, which are more expensive and pure. Lastly, there are also microcrystalline paraffins, which are characterized by having an addition of chemical compounds that provide them with flexibility and adhesion to various surfaces. Depending on their components, they can be soft and flexible or hard and brittle.

Paramedic

Among the multiple applications of paraffin, perhaps the most interesting is the use of this material in physiotherapy treatments. By applying paraffin to areas of the body that present stiffness or pain, blood circulation in the area is increased and the muscles are relaxed.

Paraffin therapy works due to the flexibility of the material and its ability to retain heat. At the same time, the moisture that forms next to the skin moisturizes and nourishes its deeper layers.
