Paraffin Rehabilitation

Paraffin Treatments

Paraffin is an extremely malleable material, with a relatively low melting point and a great capacity for thermal conduction. Once melted, paraffin can transfer heat by conduction and create a pleasant sensation for patients during application.
To melt paraffin at a temperature well tolerated by the epidermis, it is usually combined with mineral oil in a ratio of 1 part paraffin to 6 or 7 parts oil.

How does the paraffin treatment work?

The application of moist heat in areas with pain or stiffness helps to relieve chronic pain, achieve muscle relaxation, activate circulation, and improve the appearance of the skin.

Methods of application

There are three main ways to apply paraffin in rehabilitation treatments:

  • By immersion. Submerging the part of the body in liquid paraffin until it forms a film over it.
  • By pouring. Bathing the area with paraffin and wrapping it to allow the patient to rest.
  • With bandaging. Where a bandage previously soaked in paraffin is applied.

The choice of the appropriate method will always be in the hands of the health professional in charge of the treatment, who will know how to choose the one that best meets the patient’s needs.
