Refined vs Semi-refined
Paraffins are hydrocarbon derivatives obtained through refining processes. Refined paraffin is a high-purity product with an oil content of no more than 1%. Unlike semi-refined paraffin, which has a more opaque color and is soft for some applications, refined paraffin stands out for its excellent gloss and its hardness.
Refined paraffin is used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries, as well as in industrial production. Its range of applications is very broad, including wood processing, the manufacture of anticorrosive products and adhesives, the paraffining of paper and cardboard, and candle making, among others.
Although all refined paraffins are characterized by their excellent quality, they can be classified into different types, which are more or less suitable for various applications. Among our products, we offer a wide variety of refined paraffins with different melting points, ranging from 48 °C to 69 °C. With them, all kinds of candles, emulsions, polishes and base pastes, cosmetics, medicinal tablets, food additives, and more can be manufactured.
When choosing between refined and semi-refined paraffin, it is important to consider the objective or final product. In the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, for example, it is essential to have refined paraffin of the highest quality, approved by the European Pharmacopoeia, such as our Refined Paraffin 66-69 ºC P-600. On the other hand, in the manufacture of top-quality candles, the use of refined paraffin is also recommended, although depending on the type of candle, semi-refined paraffin may also be used. In any case, the overall appearance of the candles can always be improved with the use of an additive, such as our VYBAR 260. Finally, for certain industrial uses, such as the manufacture of fertilizers or cable insulation, it is often not necessary to use refined paraffin, as a good quality semi-refined paraffin at a lower cost can achieve the objective perfectly and create a more competitive product, such as our Semi-refined Paraffin 52º-54ºC.
