Description: RBD Palm Wax
Palm wax is a vegetable wax obtained from the oil of Elaeis guineensis, a species native to West Africa. Like other vegetable waxes, it has become popular as a vegan alternative to beeswax.
The palm bears fruit continuously for about 25 years after planting. Palm oil production involves harvesting, sterilizing, crushing and mechanically squeezing the pulp of the ripe fruit to obtain edible oil. The liquid and solid components of the oil are then refined and split.
Characteristics of palm wax
- High melting point. Palm wax has a relatively high melting point, generally around 50-60 °C (higher than some paraffins and soy waxes). This gives it good stability in hot climates.
- Smooth texture. Despite being solid, oil palm wax has a smooth texture and is easy to apply.
- Water resistant. This characteristic makes it a good choice for products that require protection against moisture.
Uses of palm wax and candle making
Palm wax is used in the biodiesel industry, in cosmetics and in soap making. But perhaps one of its most popular applications is in candle making.
Palm wax is a popular and convenient choice for candle making for several reasons:
- Clean burning. Its virtually smokeless combustion ensures that candles do not emit toxins or harmful particles while burning.
- Its high melting point makes the candles stronger and last longer. This is especially beneficial for large or long-lasting candles.
- Easy to colour and scent. Palm wax is easy to dye with colorants and accepts fragrances and essential oils well.
